Vancouer weekend getaway

We longed for an international getaway for the July 4th weekend, and yet for one reason or another we couldn't decide where we wanted to go until too late and it was too expensive. Such a newbie mistake.

It's a good thing we're only three hours away from great weekend getaways, Vancouver being one of the top on the list.

Kyle and I haven't been back to this city in over a decade and we're scratching our heads trying to figure out why. The food, like this mango ice cream with silver foil at Vij's, leaves an imprint on your tastebuds and heart, that you start planning to come back before you've even left.

Lodging: We loved the Rosewood Hotel Georgia, in downtown Vancouver. The service is oustanding, the room absolutely beautiful, and let's be honest, we won't complain about the free upgrade. The turn down service w/ little cookies, sitting area, and massive ensuite bathroom was a little bit of heaven that was most certainly welcome.

Pro Tip: Be sure to visit the Reflection Garden Terrace for a lovely outside meal and late night drinks at their bar, Prohibition.

Food: If traveling from Seattle, I highly recommend a stop for lunch in Edison at Mariposa Tacos for some of the best tacos in Washington. Be sure to get a side of rice and beans as well as their season agua verde. Stuffed? You're not done. Shake it off and walk a block to Breadfarm for some cookies to take on the road. They only take cash or check, but I promise you'll thank me later.

After you get settled into your room, freshen up and head straight to Vij's, a famous Indian resturaunt for some of the best Indian food. Named after the owner, Vij, is the most friendly and approachable chef we've ever met. He visits every table multiple times, welcomes regular visitors, and kindly makes some suggestions, like "oh, eat the red chili, it's delicious and not hot." Whatever you decide to order, make sure to eat the red peppers.

Pro Tip: Vij's doesn't take reservations, so arrive 30 mins early for the 5:30pm opening. You'll also be able to witness Vij's welcome and blessing, before being seated.

Pro Tip: Order the Lamb Popsicles. They're famous for it and you'll soon find out why.

On Day two, sleep in and have a Breadfarm cookie with your espresso as you slowly get ready for the day. Dress comfortable for a .75 mile walk to Ramen Santouka for a hearty brunch. Plan to arrive by 10:50am as a queue starts for their 11am opening by then. Highly recommend you order the gyoza with your ramen, it's some of the best we've had.

After brunch heads back in the direction of your hotel, to Vancouver Art Gallery for the afternoon. Not feeling a museum? Window shop or splurge at some of the boutiques in the neighborhood.

We failed to remember that July 1st was Canada Day and all museums were closed. Second newbie mistake! It wasn't all a fail, as we got to experience the locals proudly celebrate their national holiday.

Unfortunately work calls bright and early on Monday morning so we relunctantly checked out at 1pm, shoved our hoard of purchases and full bellies into the car and drove back home. It was a quick trip that left us craving for more. Vancouver, we'll be back!
